LEIDEN – Residents who cycle to the central station will have to wait longer for additional parking space. The new underground bicycle facility at Stationsplein, offering 2,800 spots, is facing a two-year delay due to persistent groundwater problems. Until then, the pressure on existing bike parking facilities remains high.
The bicycle parking is part of De Geus, a striking new multifunctional complex directly opposite the station. The building will house a cinema, two restaurants, a green rooftop garden, a Jumbo Citystore, an XL bike parking facility, and 96 apartments. Originally scheduled for completion in 2026, the project is now expected to be delivered in early 2028.
Public space upgrade also postponed
Construction of the basement floor has been hindered by high groundwater pressure. The contractor struggled to pump out the water, causing significant delays and requiring phased construction. The floor is now expected to be completed by the end of May, after which the walls will be poured.
The redesign of the surrounding public space has also been pushed back. It will now be finalized as part of the city’s Groene Loper project, shortly after De Geus is completed.
