Traffic Controllers on Bargelaan Until Summer Break

LEIDEN – To improve safety and traffic flow during rush hour, the municipality will deploy traffic controllers on Bargelaan from Tuesday, April 8 until the start of the summer holidays on Saturday, July 19. They will be present on weekdays from 7:30–11:00 AM and 3:00–6:30 PM to assist buses, cyclists, and pedestrians at this busy intersection near Leiden Central Station. The area sees heavy traffic from buses, pedestrians, cyclists, and cars dropping off or picking up passengers. While several long-term infrastructural changes were studied last December, no definitive solution has yet been found.

A trial carried out in cooperation with the province and Qbuzz showed that the use of traffic controllers has reduced delays for buses. Drivers, traffic controllers, and passengers all responded positively to the results. Although this is not a permanent fix, the presence of traffic controllers is helping in the short term. Meanwhile, the municipality is exploring long-term improvements, including alternative pick-up/drop-off locations to ease pressure on Bargelaan.
